Maths Masterclass
Term 2 - Fluency
This term, we’re running three live webinars with our expert team exploring the hot topic of Fluency in Mathematics.
But fluency is more than just “knowing your facts.”
In this practical and engaging series, we’ll unpack what it really means to be fluent in mathematics — beyond speed and recall — and explore how fluency connects to reasoning, flexibility, and deep understanding.
Across the three sessions, we will:
Clarify what mathematical fluency actually is (and what it isn’t)
Break down the key components of fluency across year levels
Model high-quality retrieval routines that strengthen long-term memory
Share outstanding classroom examples you can immediately use for practice and consolidation
Show how fluency supports confidence and reduces maths anxiety
Each webinar is designed for busy teachers. You’ll leave with ready-to-use strategies, clear explanations, and practical routines that fit seamlessly into your existing maths block.
If you want your students to be confident, flexible, and accurate mathematicians — this series is for you.
Bookings
The sessions are live and will run from 9am - 12pm AEST - with a break.
Sessions are $100 +gst each or $240+gst for all three sessions.

Leading Years F – 8 students toward mathematical fluency
There is considerable debate currently about the nature and purpose of fluency. Fluency is much more than remembering isolated facts and routines. It includes students knowing what they can recall readily, being able to use what they know to work out what they do not yet know, and being flexible about adapting this knowledge to unfamiliar situations. Rather than mechanical reproduction, it is preferable that students be able to recall automatically facts and procedures for which they understand both “how” and “why”. This webinar will elaborate these principles and offer a range of classroom experiences to develop such fluency.

Developing Multiplicative Fluency Through Strategic Thinking
The aim of this session is to provide teachers with a carefully selected range of practical activities — primarily focused on multiplication — that can be used to develop genuine mathematical fluency. These tasks are designed not only to build accuracy and efficiency, but also to support students in applying and connecting key mathematical ideas across contexts.
Participants will experience elements of the learning themselves. For example, teachers may be challenged to work with the 17 times tables. This is not intended as a test of recall, but as a deliberate opportunity to demonstrate how fluency can develop rapidly when effective strategies are used. By moving beyond rote memorisation, teachers will be encouraged to rely on number relationships, partitioning, and known facts to construct new understanding.

How to Make Maths Practice a Powerful Experience, Every Day (F-8)
There's one thing that's a given in the maths classroom, for all learners: Practice.
We know that practice is the pathway to mastery, that it’s needed for retention, and that it's critical for learning in maths.
Yet, too often practice is none of these and, instead is: passive, mindless and meaningless.
In this session, we'll focus on exactly what you can do to change this - for all learners.
Michaela will share repeatable strategies you can use to easily adapt your existing resources and make practice far more effective in the maths classroom.
