SESSION 1 - Putting the FUN back in Fun-damentals.
Boring, pointless and scary!
Sadly, these are some of the most common words our students associate with maths.
A major underlying cause for this is poor number skills. It’s hard to enjoy sport if you haven’t first learned how to run and number skills are as fundamental to enjoying maths as movement is to sport.
Number skills only develop when practiced – but practise can often look like endless textbook problems, disengaged learners and dry worksheets.
In this hands-on session you’ll experience a joyful approach to maths practice the will inspire your learners to put in the reps, not only when you are watching, but at lunchtime, afterschool and even on the weekend!
You’ll be shown how a playful approach to practise can
Cover more content in less time
Help students make connections between concepts
Engage students of all abilities
Provide opportunities to use number skills to solve interesting problems
Produce measurable progress on fluency
SESSION 2 - Mind your language!
Getting lost overseas isn’t much fun, especially when you can’t read the signs or speak the language! For a lot of students, solving maths problems feels much the same. The good news is, we can do something about it.
In this session, you’ll be shown a range of hands-on activities to provide a meaningful context for the use and repetition of mathematical terms. Learning by immersion is the fastest, most natural way to understand language, so let’s make use of it by immersing our students in the world of mathematics.
SESSION 3 - I beg to differ-entitate
Differentiation is often confused with individualised work or using an online program to deliver content at the appropriate year level. While a step in the right direction, neither of these approaches captures the essence of differentiation.
At its core, differentiation is about providing activities that are rich enough to be engaged with at multiple levels. Tasks and questions that inspire and challenge a wide range of learners.
This hands-on session will showcase a range of low-floor high-ceiling activities designed to build mathematical skill, promote collaboration, and allow students to engage at their own level of ability.
Participants will come away from this session with a range of practical ideas they can immediately implement in their own classroom.
